Plant, whey or collagen, which protein powder do you actually need

Plant, whey and collagen protein powders

Protein powder used to be a bodybuilder thing. Now it is busy parents, people in their sixties trying to hold onto muscle, and anyone who skips a proper breakfast. The tubs on our shelf say plant, whey, collagen and bone broth, and they are not interchangeable, so before you spend forty dollars on the wrong one, here is what actually separates them.

First, do you even need it

Protein powder is food, not a supplement in the vitamin sense. It is just a convenient way to get protein when real meals are not happening. If you already eat plenty of eggs, meat, fish, dairy or legumes across the day, you may not need it at all. Where it earns its place is the rushed morning, the post workout window, or older age when appetite drops but protein needs go up.

Whey

Whey comes from milk and is the classic muscle building protein. It is a complete protein, it absorbs quickly, and it mixes into a smooth shake. Concentrate suits most people, while isolate is more filtered and lower in lactose if dairy sits heavily with you. Look for grass fed if you can, the taste and the story are both a bit nicer. Not suitable if you are dairy free or vegan.

Plant, including pea, rice and hemp

Plant proteins have caught up a lot. A good blend of pea and rice covers the full amino acid profile, and hemp brings a bit of fibre and healthy fats along with it. This is the pick if you are vegan, dairy free, or you just find whey a bit rich. The texture is slightly earthier, so flavours like chocolate and cacao mint carry it well.

Collagen and bone broth protein are not muscle building all rounders. Collagen is missing one of the essential amino acids, so it is a top up aimed at skin, hair, nails and joints rather than your daily protein target. Bone broth protein is savoury and gut friendly and stirs beautifully into soups and casseroles. Use them alongside a complete protein, not instead of one.

Collagen and bone broth, the specialists

People love collagen for skin and joints, and while the science is still catching up, plenty of our regulars swear by their morning scoop in a coffee. Bone broth protein is the quiet achiever, especially through winter, stirred into a mug or used to build up a soup. Neither should be your only source of protein, but both have a real place.

What we stock

A rough guide. Building or holding muscle, whey or a solid plant blend. Dairy free, go plant or hemp. Skin, hair and joints, collagen. Gut and comfort food, bone broth. Most tubs give you around twenty to twenty five grams a scoop, so one scoop turns a light breakfast into a proper one.

How to actually use it

One scoop in water, milk or a smoothie is plenty for most people, once a day. There is no prize for doubling up, your body can only use so much at once and the rest is expensive. Blend it with a banana and some oats and you have a breakfast that will actually hold you until lunch.

The full range sits across Protein Powders, with the plant, whey and collagen options split out, and if you want a hand matching one to your goals we are at 936 Anzac Parade, Maroubra, open seven days.
